Has anyone been? I'll be visiting San Juan over X'mas... is there anything to do there?

This isn't my first choice, but me mam's having a rather important bday so I thought I'd take her. It will also be my first visit to the Carribbean...

Any suggestions - more than welcome!

Did a mileage run to the airport once but never left it I'm afraid. It looked quite hilly and green from the air, and more like a slightly upmarket version of, say, The Philippines in terms of buildings and so on - not like part of the USA at all...

Sorry, that isn't much help, is it?

Haven't been to Puerto Rico. What's its status? Is it a USA Protectorate? Do we need visas to visit?

Same visa requirements as the US - if you are taking a flight from a US city then it is effectively a domestic flight, no immigration or anything like that.

i think its very annoying that you have to get a US visa even just for transit in the states.

That's OK with me... I have a valid visa in an old passport. They just have to OK it. If not then I have no choice but to apply for another.

I am quite looking forward to it though... carribbean sounds pretty exotic to me, especially if it looks like this!

answering this one late .... PR is beautiful ... if you know where to go ... Old San Juan is the historic district - very picturesque and very spanish ... great food, friendly peeps, gorgeous beaches ... New San Juan is where the night life is ... not sure if your mum is into that ... it is a small island ... there are rainforests there ... resorts and it is very crowded ... it is a stop for every cruise ship in the caribbean so expect a LOT of stupid americans walking around not knowing a thing ... i haven't been there in a while but I personally love the caribbean ... for us it is our resort area like Thailand and Bali are for you guys ... the only difference is the I guess cause I live in NY ... i don't notice any 'culture' so to speak in PR ... since half the population of NY comes from there!!

Is that the only place you are going? You going to the States at all??

I am an American - born and bred. And I wouldn't want it any other way.

BTW ... the carribean can be very iffy ... a lot of resorts are crap ... and the nicer beaches are of course taken up by the pricier resorts ... the thing is to cruise the caribbean ... you get to island hop ... and you get to go to private beaches which are unspoiled and amazing ...

But for the picture you posted, truly, you should go to the Bahamas ... never have I seen crystal clear water as I have in the Bahamas ... it is beyong anything I have seen anywhere on the planet ... the water is turquoise and you can see all the way done ... take a charter flight from one island to another ... amazing !!!

Been to a few Caribbean islands but sadly not to PR. As a favourite, I remember Grenada being stunning.

My parents recently had a holiday in Dominica and loved it. More nature than beaches though.

PR is a great place, I have visited San Juan few times. In addition to Harley's comments, I would say that most PRicans have a huge culture behind them (Native are not very Americanized) so try to enjoy this part the most. How long are you staying in SJ? The ideal is to meet some local people (In your case, it will be a HOT JLo look like) and I could assure that you'd be set, and probably want to extend your trip. Make sure you try some local delicacies such as Bacalao, Chelupas, Platanos and of course some Rice and beans. (BTW< I miss the food in NYC, The BEST)

I'm confident you'd enjoy your stay, and share the experience with us once you get back.

Lots to see and do in PR. And there is a LOT of culture and history in PR.
Rent a car and drive around the island. Check out the little beaches and coves.
Go to El Yunque and go hiking in the rain forest. Then go swimming at the waterfall at the foot of the mountain or at Luquillo beach.
Go to Ponce and visit Don Q Rum distillery or the Bacardi one in San Juan
Walk through the streets of old San Juan down Paseo de la Princesa and visit museums and check out El Morro. Protected the island (and has withstood all tornados) until the Americans invaded.
Camuy Caves and the famous observatory in Arecibo.

Casinos in most of the hotels down town at night, plus the night clubs. Lots of shopping (Plaza las Americas).
However, like any city, there is crime. Take a couple of mosquito rackets with you, battery operated and some salsa lessons before you go, and you will not regret it.

I'm bored, I'm pi*sy, and, I have no shame.
