what do you guys do when something totally unexpected happens and you are just numb because you can't believe what happened - like someone has kicked u in the gut ... how do you immediately pick yourself up and go on about as if nothing has happened??

Everybody deals with unexpected news differently, so what works for one may or may not work for you. However, like Spanner said, sometimes finding a good friend or a family member to talk things over may be a good place to start, even if you don't come away feeling better, at least it's given you a chance to vent and rant and maybe help your brain begin dealing with whatever it is.

Unexpected news can be good or bad news. How each deals with such news can be different.

you make a call - either you take control of the situation or you hide under the blankets... me, i prefer the former option...

But sometime hiding under the covers is exactly what you need until you get bored and fed up of feeling sorry for yourself and you have to get up and take control of your life again.

Miss Davidson,

Best speak to somebody. I'm guilty of bottling things up in the past, but you really cant beat having a chat with someone about your dilema. Even if they can offer no direct help, it always feels better to now that someone else is thinking about you and can offer you support if you need it again. Choose your friend wisely though...

Some people do both.
Hide under the blankets for a few days then tell yourself to get out there and face it if that makes it easier.
And remember, some people make it look easy but that doesn't mean that it is easy.
Not everyone wears their heart on their sleeve.

i guess the point is that at some point you'll have to decide to move on with your life. sitting and dwelling on a subject doesn't serve any purpose, so why delay making that call? i'm not saying you have to forget what happened, but beating yourself up or wallowing in guilt serves no positive purpose...

Blimey Harley, is this something medical, children, partner, family, financial or work related - not that you have to share that with anyone here......only my only tuppence, but I'd say if its not medical or children related, it is possible to deal with the other issues rationally. Serious medical conditions with yourself or your children really are the most difficult to deal with in my view.

Whatever...
