A great day's shopping in Shenzhen, only spoiled by those discriminatory @#$#@%*& in HK customs. But we survived ... did gdv's budget?????? I have left the country as far as you and your sharp knives are concerned gdv. Hopefully by the time I return you will have cooled down with your trip to Perth. [:x)] [:x)] [:x)]

Flying out tomorrow night - though don't tell gdv since he may be after me. But will have internet access from time to time so will keep in touch. What are you gonna do to stay cool this summer???? And are you gonna come HK way in maybe early Sept for a hkexpats boat trip??

Y'know, I just can't settle tonight coz the bubble of anger inside of me is so huge that despite a glass of wine, it won't settle. The anger is because of the injustice that was shown to someone today by the HK immigration people. I know they just felt they were doing their job, but by jaysus their interpretation and follow-through of their job was probably the most unintelligent I have seen from bureaucrats for a long while. The evidence was in front of their eyes, but still they had to big-note themselves. I just wish I could have king-hit someone, maybe that would release the tension. Although I would be in jail now .... God save us from petty bureaucrats!!!! They are the world's worst enemies and such a waste of space.

We already had summer.. I left the country to get cool! I think we are in spring.. (not that 4 seasons exist).
Dooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooon't Goooooooooooooooooooooooo.... I need to see what the hubby says.. But it would be fun to come and do what you suggested..
You guys have way too much fun.. and maybe my dream was really.... .. dejavu'...

I think immigration agencies all over the world have issues. I could tell you a couple from the US, at the airport. I couldn't/didn't say anything because I was with the hubby. In hindsight, I should have let my husband clear, and then gone back and asked for names and a supervisor.

gdv - I kept pacing up and down outside the restricted area and calling every immigration person over and telling them how racist they were!!!! They kept shooing me back to the official waiting area until they got sick of me and allowed me to stand and wave through the window. I kept demanding to see the senior officer, but the lowly ones were too scared of them! That had me laughing.

My other friend there said her NZ brother wasn't allowed out of Heathrow once when he was visiting his English girlfriend because they got it in their heads that he was going to work illegally - they deported him and he had to take them to court to get in again!!!!! So I guess we all need to be very very afraid of the extraordinary powers immigration people have these days - particularly since they seem to be power-hungry officious idiots. No wonder they want xray machines - it just adds to their sense of power.

It is immigration all over the world, at least in HK, I have not heard any yelling as in the USA, Spain, etc. And Mainland China officials are polite too. I think it is about profiling which means generalisations and being unfair to some caught in the general net, but is there a more effective way for them to manage?

Reminds me of one time I flew into the airport here last year. Immigration had a couple of counters open, obviously not planning for several plane loads arriving so close together. We were sheparded along to another counter and after half an hours were asked to move again because all the people in front were domestic helpers arriving. So ended up in a queue the size of the original 30 mins before. In all it took over 45 mins to get through passport control! Straight after that I applied for frequent flyer, which meant going straight through an empty counter the next time! Could only use that once though cos then got married and visa, etc.......

hmm, speaking of unopened counters....why is it that even on the busiest days, the supermarkets still have 30% of their counters closed?

dont they find it abnormal that 7-8 people are in a queu.....

i would really love to see some competition for the supermarkets, both functionality wise and also selection wise!

Always the way here GDV. Even the alternatives like Taste and Gourmet are similar but, especially in the case of Gourmet, they are more specialist. The Park and Shop superstore in Shatin has a lot more selection, only thing is at the weekend it's worse than walking around Mongkok!
