Cars - any recommendations? [ New Topic]

I'm looking to get another car and the only pre-requisite is that it has to be Japanese. I don't want another Euro car because parts are a nightmare, usually at least 3 times more expensive and servicing is a pain - the last time my air con was repaired it took almost 2 weeks due to parts having to be ordered specially.

So, any recommendations? It has to be a 4 door, medium to large size, with an engine over 2 litres (the hills here in the new territories kills anything smaller!). With a budget of 60-100k (poss a bit more, although I don't see the need to have money sitting there most of the week doing nothing!). Considerations so far - Toyota Camry (bit borin looking and driving), Mitsubishi Gallant VRM (Not bad looking - seems decent but heard some stories about gearbox failures), Lexus ES300 - great drive but big engine lots of costs, Honda Accord - again boring looking to the point of sleep, Lexus IS200 (not Toyota Altrezza) - out of budget (just) but great looking/driving car. Any other recommendations, or stories about your Jap cars?[:D][:D]

ahhhh, the proverbial optimal choice. Read something other day in SCMP about the little car good for HK, was that a Jap car? How about Korean Hyundai?

Most little cars are more than good enough HK side, but some of the hills here in the new territories really kills them off! Not a great fan of Korean cars, a friend of mine had a Kia Sorento (big 4WD) back in the UK. (Kia owned by Hyundai). Lovely looking car it has to be said, but ended up being towed back to the dealer 3 times in the first year and as it was his busines car he lost thousands of pounds in lost business. Most Korean car owners seem to suffer the same fate

personally I'd avoid Mazda .....I had a quote, parts only mind you, from the local stealer (aka dealer) 8K for timing belt......it did break and 3K for aftermarket parts and labour - however there are some bits that you can't find and you will have to pay the price for OEM.

I agree HK'er, friends of mine have a Mazda and had plenty of problems and again had it off road for quite a while being fixed and that was done in their Dad's garage place! I'm kinda thinking along the lines of Toyota/Lexus, Honda and Mitsubishi. Although open to suggestions!

Yeah I know life, and I have looked at a few Accords (and the big Acura), knowing that they are reliability personified. And I know that if I got one it could be mine for life (lol), but just can't get over the blandness of them. The new Honda Accord is a completely different kettle of fish however........

Toyota and Honda have the best record overall. You could always be creative with spray paint to jazz up the looks.

which european car you have now? I drive BMW since many years in HK and think the parts even cheaper than for many japanese cars, of yourse you need to avoid the BMW Garage.

Always drove BMW's in UK Mango, but here I've had nothing but problems. So thats why brreaking the habit of a lifetime and looking at Jap cars. Don't need a car everyday, maybe use it twice a week for work (and tax reasons) and at weekends

[:-(] [:-(] [:-(] I miss my little Honda CRV. It was such a great car but I sold it before I left home [:-(] [:-(]. I used to drive it the three hours or so, single lane, mountainous highway to my parents home every fortnight or so and it handled so well. OK, bit short on power, being a 4 cylinder, but with torque so you could really manipulate those gears to get a smooth ride (manual of course). And really fuel efficient. Only thing that ever went wrong with it over the two years was some obscure phlange, but regular servicing picked that up. I had it full with 4 adult sized kids, two dogs and all the baggage and it was just wonderful. And so easy to manipulate around town too. Sigh. I loved that car.

You need a small car in Hong Kong. Buy the Nissan March. It's small on the outside, spacious on the inside and it's cheap too.

A Nissan March would be shagged driving over Monkey Mountain!! And way, way too small!! Need something I can get 2 large suitcases into and 5 people. And it's gotta be able to cope with mountain driving, and not so much of the city.

Have looked at them HK'er but don't think I'm old enough yet to have one!! Know their very popular here, and I have been here for a long while but my brain is still in the UK as far as they are concerned! I men I had only just gotten old enough to get into the 4WD set back in England!

CRV, CRV, CRV, yay! But you could go for the HRV if you don't have kids. There is a Honda multi-seater that is really small and works well in the city - friends have it but it is not available in Oz so I can't remember the name. But Honda are great, tho' boring. So if you are having a male mid-life crisis, it is not the car for you. If you want reliability and an all-round practical car, then go for it.
