I would like to dedicate this thread to encouraging and helping those unfamiliar with the N.T. on how to get here and some of the simple things they can do.
For starters, I would like to suggest a visit to Ma On Shan.

The new KCR extension gets you to Ma On Shan after changing at Tai Wai Station - the first stop after Kowloon Tong.

Ma On Shan was the site of Whitehead Detention Centre where thousands of Vietnamese asylum seekers were housed up until the mid 1990's. It is also the location of a huge scam involving the foundation work on public housing.

Anyways, the whole area has been redeveloped beyong the few Thai Restuarants that marked the section of Sai Sha Road going to Sai Kung.

These days you can practice your gold swing, rent a sailboard, row boat, wakeboard, kitesurf and fish. The whole waterfront area from Tai Wai is accessible by a smooth bicycle track. The water's edge is a curved edge concrete wall that you can dangle your feet over while fishing or reading.

Apart from getting there by KCR, you can rent bikes from Tai Wai or Shatin. In Shatin, bike's can be rented or bought from
Edmond Cho and Shung Lee Bikes (Lucky Plaza facing Wo Che and around the corner from the Shatin wet market) Ph: 2695 7195. You can also try a lot of other vendors in Tai Wai and Ma On Shan. You can not ride bikes on Sai Sha Roads on Sundays and public holidays.

The cycling route from Shatin to Ma On Shan shoiuld put you on the right side of the Shing Mun River where there is less traffic. It will take you past the Jockey Club (on the left) and City One housing complex and the floating restaurant on the right.

If you do cycle expect crowds on the weekends and be prepared to be crashed into.

You can take a bike on the KCR if you take the front wheel off.

This time I will focus on the left side of the Shing Mun River heading towards Tai Po.
This time KCR access is available, though there is no need to change stations at Tai Wai. If you are biking it, get off at Tai Wai as it is less crowded. If you need to rent a bike and get it from Shatin, then get off at Shatin and head down to the Cho brothers in Lucky Plaza.
Heading North along the left hand side of the Shing Mun River you will pass the Jockey club and then the Chinese University. If you like hills and want to see a larger campus for HK's tertiary elite, have a wander or bike through the HKCU. There are a few canteens and some nice hills heading towards the old Tai Po Road.
If you do not go into the CU, you will keep heading towards Tai Po and follow the edge of the Tolo Harbour and go past the Science and Technology Park. The place is a a bit of a white elephant, however the head gardener must have the biggest checkbook in town because the streets are lined with bright and exotic and very colourful tropical shrubs and flowers. It is really worth the pick me up tour.
Also in the area is the ferry terminal for Tap Mun Chau (grass island). You can find the ferry schedule on the internet www.traway.com.hk and you can call one of the numbers and they will fax the schedule to you. Also you can take bikes and kitchen sinks. there is a list of items.
So if you keep heading to Tai Po, you will come to a junction at Wang Fuk Estate. You can go right and head to Tai Mei Tuk which will connect you to Brides Pool and then Sha Tau Kok Road which will eventually be the long way to Fan Ling. It's a real bum buster so make sure you have good bike shorts. You will go past the reservoir and see a few cows and also the fishing lakes. It is a great ride.
If you go straight on at Wang Fuk then you can cruise into Tai Po old town and cruise around. If you are adventurous you can head towards Hong Lok Yuen and follow the KCR on both sides of the track and ride all the way to Shenzhen. If you do this make sure there are at least two of you cos the local dogs are dangerous.
If you do make it to Sheung Shui, you can put your bike on the KCR and head back or you can cycle...
If you just head to Tai Mei Tuk, you can ride your bike across the bank between the reservoir and the Tolo Harbour. You can fly a kite, rent a boat, canoe etc.

Let's talk about the fun in Tai Mei Tuk
The Leisure and Cultural Services Department LCSD controls sports among other things in HK and if you want to use their stuff which is really good and cheap, then you have to be qualified. You can try and get your overseas qualifications to work, but an easier way is to do one of their cheap and inexpensive courses where you will make a lot of friends.
There are weekend and weekday courses listed at http://ballot.lcsd.gov.hk/list.cfm?lang=en if that does not work start at www.lcsd.gov.hk and check out the link for LEISURE PROGRAMMES.
If you really cannot be bothered with courses, you can join the Tai Po boat club in Tai Mei Tuk http://www.taipoboatclub.com.hk/ and it is much cheaper than all the other boat clubs but I guess you will have to discuss your qualifications with them.
