If you had to pick, which one would you choose? I assume Beijing due to the historical sites, etc. and it is reasonably close to the great wall .... do the better hotels arrage trips to and from?
Is there anything really truly to do in Shanghai? What I mean is that I if I never return to Asia which other than India is a definite, will I regret not seeing Shanghai or is it just another big city with lots of tall buildings and the usual? Am i missing anything unique like I am not being able to visit vietnam/cambodia or the more interior areas of china that i understand are spectacular in terms of scenery?
Thanks for your help in advance whoever responds.

If you have the time, ideally you should do both - Shanghai is lovely, Pudong especially and the food is fabulous. You might as well check out Ningbo too - a good example of an up and coming tier 2 city, and the emergent middle classes.
But if you really had to make a choice, Bejing probably the best bet - especially for the all-important photo-ops!
Go to Vietnam though too Harley, it is worth it

shanghai is also good too, but i think it's a little bit similar to HK
i agree with AKA, if you have time, you should do both

I would LOVE to go to Vietnam and Cambodia but we just don't have the time time so it was down to three cities, New Delhi to see the Taj Mahal or Beijing to see the Great Wall or Shanghai ... and from what Mr H wants, looks like Beijing wins. It would be kinda sad to come all the way and live in HK for 15 months and not even cross the border once. Just don't have the time - I am sure I will be back to India many more times for family but not to China ... so Beijing wins At least the weather will be cold which I will LOVE .... and when we come back I think I leave for good in two weeks,
Thanks guys.
AKA - i don't know if you are or are not gimpmask, but if you are, i miss you lots and sorry we will never get the chance to meet before i leave, u were always one of my faves and thanks for all the sincere and sound advice, Same to you imdarling. I hope you understand why I choose to stay away from here as much as possible. But thanks for the kind words - it is nice to know that there are people who care and understand there are two sides to a story and that at the very least you and TB wil miss me!! I will miss you guys as well.

I would avoid cities entirely in China and go to see the natural wonders instead. All cities tend to look the same there.

I enjoyed Shanghai the two times I was there simply becuase I love wining and dining and it's lavish and lush there. The modern hotels are even more glam than in HK.
I stayed near the Bund which I like a lot.
No sightseeing for me. Hate it. I did go to friends' homes for dinners besides out to restaurants. Interesting architecture.
Went to a couple of spas and had some massage therapy by Thais which was nice.
The people there are more gentle and quiet and there is far more open space so no one runs into you.
Spit everywhere. Be warned.

Between the two, I'd choose Beijing as well. Apart from the wining & dining that Chicago has already mentioned, there isn't much to recommend Shanghai for IMO.
