Hi
Anyone been to Laos? Any tips? Is it really just a place to go to look at things? Or are their beach resorts?
Thanks

Laos is landlocked by Thailand, China, Cambodia and Vietnam! Luang Prabang is next to a river and there are hotels / hostels a few step from it. Vang Vieng is famous for kayaking and tubing and it's absolutely beautiful there. I stayed in a bungalow with a balcony and a hammock over looking the river in Muang Ngoi and it was wonderfully relaxing, though the village doesn't really have much other activity besides trekking.
How long are you there for?
How funky is your chicken?

Vientiane is pretty sleepy for capital city and can be walked or biked around. It's a few years since I was there but back then nightlife took place around the fountain. Though there was also a nice place on stilts above the river. The main sights in town are the Wat Tat Luang and the verticle runway. The Verticle Runway is a sort of Arch De Triomphe affair that was built in the 70's out of US concrete that was intended for ... well you can guess ....
Luang Prabang is a former royal city and probably the country's number one tourist spot. The Mekong River passes by on one side and the Nam Khan on the other. A hill called Phu Si separates the two and is a great place to watch the sunset. The two rivers meet at the northern end of the town.
Ponsavan is the stepping off point for the Plain of Jars and has, or at least had, the distinction of being the most heavily bombed place on earth. Probably still is since the bombing went on for 9 years. Be sure to visit the Mines Advisory Group, ask for directions or to be taken to 'Koo Labert'. DO NOT pick up any rusty looking tennis balls. They are cluster bombs and you will see them, lots of them.

went to laos last xmass via hanoi..............laos is very cheap for food travel and accomodation..luang prabang is the highlight..the country is quite dramatic in places with mist covered mtns with dense rainforests...the people are very friendly and easy going ....travel is by local bus and long slow journeys as the roads are narrow and winding but its an adventure....
