Emotions and cultures [ New Topic]

Is it true that the British, Chinese, Dutch, Belgian and Germans avoid expressing emotions and/or get severely uncomfortable with overt expressions of emotion? Is it true that the Meditteranean countries, the US, Sth Americans and Africans are all comfortable with displays of emotion? Where do cultures like Oz and NZ and Canadian and Russian fit in with this.

Is it better to "let it all hang out" or to repress and suppress emotional displays. How many of you hug and kiss your parents and kids all the time?

Obviously you are all shy people out there [:x)]. I know that my parents didn't do the big hug and smooch routine that we do with our kids. And phonecalls never ended with "love you" with parents but does with kids. The 'stiff upper lip' of my parent's generation seems to be dissolving, thank god. Maybe due to multiculturalism, who knows? I was always really envious of my greek-australian friend whose household reverberated with passion. On the other hand, this could be very tiring [;)]. Tho it is nice to be able to show and articulate emotions without resentment ... [:x)] [xx(] [:(!] [;)] [:(] [xo]

There are displays of emotion...and then there are Displays of emotion.

I have no problem showing affection, laughing 'til I cry, or even shedding a quiet tear at the opera. But the kind of self-indulgent behaviour you sometimes see just turns my stomach - whether it's Americans on TV (eg. Oprah show), Chinese girls hysterically screaming at their boyfriends, or Tony Blah's pained facial expressions and faltering voice that are just so plainly fake.

Nothing wrong with a little moderation to keep things in perspective.

Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.

IMHO, I think Germans are cold. I think they are brought up to always show a stiff upper lip, and anything else is a sign of weakness.. and god forbid we have a weak German!
I think americans are more comfortable with emotions because it is ingrained in us from TV shows to the point that we feel anything less is just not normal.

Ohhhh my gosh, the world is coming to an end.. is your signature now "always polite and friendly"? Mango I almost choked over my coffee!

But I sent you a hug, after your post, and I gave you the location for my smilies. Smiley central.com

So Mango, what is your input on this topic?

Kamote, what is the warning about "kamote". You have lost me on that one.

Now THAT is what I call scary honesty. When a guy can actually admit, that he had a couple too many, woke up with a stranger in his bed, who fled when he/she woke up.
When HE WOKE UP? Yep, Mango has already stated that the whisky changes the taste of people. That is a very, very, very, scary thought.

Might I suggest the Bumblee bee drink less in the future.. [;)]

Mango, sorry but you left yourself WIDE OPEN! And I just could not resist.

Yeah - maybe one thing to shower before bedtime, but the sight of a mango, without breath freshener and night-time anti wrinkle cream was too much????? [:x)] [:u] [:u] [88]
