Hope you get a nice surprise this evening!

For the non-Dutchies/Belgians: 5 December is Sinterklaas in Holland. It's the evening you gather with your loved ones (or co-workers) and exchange gifts. These gifts are called surprises because they will be skilfully wrapped as a surprise, and often accompanied by a poem from Sinterklaas/St Nicholas (sometimes limerick style). Kids put a shoe outside *since there are hardly chimneys anymore* for Sinterklaas to fill with candy and suprises. It's Dutch tradition to celebrate Saint Nicholas instead of Christmas Eve.

it's a kids thing in Belgium. and I think it's normally the 6th. Up North it is 5th in the evening.

when we were kids we used to get up like, 6 seconds past midnight

Actually, the fun part is not in the gifts but the wrapping and the poem. Those poems can be quite unkind. They are anonymous and they have to be read out loud. So you can get back at your nemesis of the year that way.
You need all your creative skills for the wrapping. Some people tend to get very competitive when making the wrappings. Lots of arts and crafts going on.

And I forgot, it's also a tradition to receive a chocolate letter and eat loads and loads of spiced cookies.
