some questions about keeping a fishtank. I got mine for about two years now, but I must do something wrong

I just put tap water in, with some products. In the very beginning, many fish didn't seem to like it as they often did a submarine impression, belly up on the surface ...

Next I get snails regularly. I've changed the greenery already a few times, but they keep coming back, sometimes in huge figures. I got a product which cleans them (and not the fish), but a few weeks later they're back

Finally I got a shark type fish which likes to eat the little ones ... expensive hobby it seems

As I'm moving flat soon, I'd like to start all over again, any tips ?

fresh water. The temperature should be about 30-32 degrees

anyone experience with salt water ? I'm considering that as well. I've seen some very nice setups with jellyfish. Is salt water a lot more work ?

obviously its fresh water as the snail pest is know for that.

very hard to get rid of as they grow in the soil and roots of plants! clean up your tank of them over time, and dont introduce any new plants from shops, rather make some friends in the hobby and trade cut offs off plants, this will help.

ive had freshwater for about 5 years and saltwater in Hk for about 7 years, trust me fresh water is dirt cheap compared to saltwater, with its special lighting to grow coral etc and cooler for the tank etc . my initial salt water set up costed me roughly 22K

thats a wrong idea, salt water is not more difficult, you do however have to know about water, salt, specific gravity, and the basics of how a tank keeps a balance.

i would say salt water is easier as long as your willing to incvest in 1-2 good books and READ and LEARN.

in my time i never did any water change, only top ups, this is probably one of the biggest mistakes people do, is water changing and cleaning too much

easier to go with plastic plants....and learn about the kind of fish you buy before buying them.

different kinds have different social habits.

for example, some are schoolers. if you buy only a few of them then they will stick together and panic easily if any other kind comes near them. some are aggressive and can only be kept with the same kind.

some feed at different heights. this is important to remember because if you mix the level of feeders then the top feeders will eat most of the food before it reaches mid or low level and those kinds will most likely die.

there are loads of tips online on how to keep aquariums as well as many easy read books to help you too.

best of luck

700 liters, that's a pretty big tank. I'll measure mine tonight.

Freak I agree changing water every so many months can never be good, I also top up slowly and preferably at night with 'warm' water, warm as in get it from the tap in the afternoon and leave it in a bucket for the day with some product in it

schippie I have always kept with my original supplier, always went with his advice. does not seem to be the way to go, as the fish don't work.
I've read magazines and sites before I bought the stuff, and also in my war against snails, but now I'd like some first-hand information.

Geraldo, better skip the "products" and instead use distilled water "watsons" or something like that, as the "products dont remove anything, they merely neutralize it.

700 liter is like a big cabinet in your living room yes, and it will warm your room up with a couple of 20 K lamps above it, and a water(as in air) conditioner for the warm months (9/12) and a heater element for the cold months!

since i sold my set up i still miss it every day!

Mostly, don't use fresh trap water. Not good.
