in Japan this is a common and accept (and expected) custom. I am heading to the UK (for the second time in my life) and since its a long flight with fiance and kid to pack for (and lets not forget bulky winter gear), I was thinking of just giving the kids of the family laisee packets.
Now, my question is:
Is this ok?
And if so:
How many quid is a suitable sum to gift as a christmas gift?

Depends how old the kids are - it's perfectly OK. Twenty quid a kid 'll shut the little buggers up.
Average by Intention.

they are something like 8, 11, 17 and then there are a few more...er....dunno how many...which is why it can get expensive and heavy if i bought toys etc...he has 3 sisters...and all 3 have at least one or 3 kids...damn...
Yeah I was thinking about 50 quid as my colleague said "25 quid will be fine" and when I asked him "well what can you buy with that?" he replied "er, f**kall...something cheap, I guess" so I guess I dont want to overdo it and might gift the older ones 50 and the younger than 12 ones 25?

J C , it's not nice to give unequal amount to different age. Best to even out for every one the same. may be 30 guid each ?

Another suggestion JC. You may buy them some cute stationaries, as in the UK the HK cute stuffs can become special.

Wow JC, you're setting yourself up here for a life of AT LEAST 50 quid for Christmas for every kid in your world. I would give 20, they can get plenty. Why would an 8 year old need more than that? Flip side- if it were my kid and you gave him 50 quid and I didnt normally spend that much on my sisters cousins etc etc myself, you would really p**s me off.

>freepanda - that is a fantastic idea actually, I used to be such a big fan of stationary when i was a kid...I guess I could pick up stuff at Jusco 10 dollar shop and then just gift each kid 20 Quid?
>Emily Bronte - fair point. Its just that I asked the fiance how much he gifted last year and he said he gave the older ones HKD1000 each and then bought gifts for the younger ones in the UK (although he did say he was mortified that they were nothing cheaper than about 45 quid each for the toys). This year of course he is thinking more of a HKD500 and just gift cash to them all (there are 5 kids).
Since its my first time meeting his family I didnt want to make any mistakes in what I picked. I mean...from the sounds of it...the two brother in laws got nail clipper sets last year!
I cant stand christmas shopping and I am usually ever so glad when the new year has come and gone...so I guess stationary and fake watches from Temple street will have to be the choice du jour...along with 20 quid. I already bought the gifts for his 3 sisters, 2 brother in laws and 1 neice aged 17 (cool glittery make up set and perfume set with glitter lip gloss, glitter perfume spray and glittery bath wash...yeah, either I am in the total "i would have loved that when i was her age" mode or i am totally out of date and she will hate it!)

give them an hmv voucher or a book voucher or an amazon voucher or something like that instead of pure cash... 10 quid or 20 quid is more than enough... any more than that will put other people's presents to shame and will make you look like a flash git...

oh no!!!
Now I am honestly going to be freaking out!!! I think I might look like a flash git with the choices I have made! But I actually thought it was the cheapest option going!!!
Please be the judge on whether the following is too flash or good gift ideas:
For the future sister in laws (he has 3 sisters, all older, so 35+) Got each a Pashmina shawl, silk scarf (both bought pretty cheap in India), Elizabeth Arden handcream w/lipbalm set.
For the future brother in laws (he has 2) Got each a new I-shuffle.
For the future neice who is 17 - glittery make up and perfume.
I dunno...I couldnt think of anything else that you can buy older people that they might appreciate that wont make you look like you didnt think about it...or like a cheap git...but I didnt want to look too flash...am I doing ok or am I going to be off the mark?

Well, these gifts are supposed to be from us as a family (the fiance, the kidlet and I) so it doesnt seem too bad, right?

Haha, are you saying what I think you are? Yeah, when I started dating him a friend of mine warned me that Scottish people are "thight gits"...I havent seen much evidence of that. He is not a major consumer...but when it comes to stuff he likes he will spend a lot, but yeah, he seems to be quite smart about it.
What was it he said? "I'm not tight, I am just financially cautious" or something...That was his comments after buying my engagement ring where he was rendered speechless for an hour.

Just what I was thinking, he's probably sweating about the precedents you have set for him already. Stop there, JC, you don;t need any more. You've done yourself prod. Or even , proud.

I guess with me its been years since I spent christmas with my own siblings or parents (probably something like 8 years) so its kinda like this is extra special for me as I love "family". Also this is the first christmas that I will have my kidlet all to myself in nearly 6 years, in the past my ex has taken him to the UK over christmas or we have had to share him half the day or something. So yes, I am in a more "generous" mood.

I agree with Emily and Rodigan, 50 quid is far too much and may embarrass other people. 20 should be generous enough, they can but a CD, DVD or book with it.
