quote: Originally posted by Chicago I think buffets here are just stupid. Most of the "expensive" food is frozen stiff or the live lobster as they promote are actually Indo slipper lobster - it's just a big hype because locals seem to thrive on buffets.
Whenever they have anything of decent value like fresh oysters being shucked, they make sure there are almost none open so you have to wait for them thus keeping the cost down because people are embarrassed to wait for more than one or two.
They generally use the cheapest of the cheapest of everything including salmon.
yes agree buffets here are stupid because people want them for rediculously low prices, but they do want the whole chibang on them. i am lucky i work somewhere where we hardly ever do buffets, or only for private functions.
Be fair what do you expect to get "UNLIMITED" for some thing like HK$ 300 a head? most places have to run at a food cost of around and about 32-34 %
that gives you HK$ 100 per person to buy and prep food at, now thats not a very lot of money especially when you consider what people load up on plates:
3-4 oysters 6 slices sashimi 2 slices pate 30 grams smoked salmon 2 pieces fresh yabbies 1 slice of duck liver mousse 80 grams of variaty of salads bowl of lobster soup 2 bread rolls 2 slices lamb rack 1/2 a lobster thermidor 1 0.5 inches thick cut of Prime Grade Beef rib 1 slice of salmon vege and potatoes 60 grams sweet and sour pork 3 strawberries in chocolate fondue 1 warm chocolate pudding 1 slice cheese cake few slices fresh fruits
try and do that by yourself for less then a HK$ 100
and then you also have those people who are smart and only eat the lobster, oysters and prime rib and request plate loads full of it which ultimately end in the bin......

I know GDV, that's why I don't ever eat from buffets here. The hotels cannot possibly put out the best of anything. People are piggy at best.......I can't even watch them load up, I get too annoyed.

Last time I did a buffet was a freebie voucher da missus got from somewhere, it was free for all scrapyard...... never never again!!!!
If ya dont want it, dont maul it!!!!

thats the way i like to eat it also..let teh chefs cook it fresh and yumy, then bring it to me and let me enjoy
but i have to say if all hotels would drop buffets they would see revenue streams plummet like crazy, HKers are just addicted to buffets

Buffets are OK if you are taking kids out; they usually find stuff they like and they enjoy serving themselves etc. On the whole though the quality of food isn't good and watching some people get their pigs troughs full and waddling back to their tables is bloody awful. Some places though do a decent spread but on the whole I prefer ordering what I want and having it cooked for me.
Now don't get me started on fookin' steamboat cos I've got to go and have that dire experience tonight with friends of the family...
Oh goody goody.......

ive never had the opportunity to cook a proper steamboat yet, its good for an amazing crowd of nearly 200 people if you get the whole one.
then again this is something very questionable.......imagine a huge roast of about 70-80 kilos, by the time its done inside its fooking overcooked and dried out on the outside
Good luck LT, youll gain a few pounds tonight!
