With the wife and 1/2 the family stuck in London and myself with the other half here in HK the only chance of a family holiday this year is if we meet up half-way for a few days sometime over the next 2-3 weeks.
Dubai is an obvious candidate - but is it a family holiday destination? Are there resorts or is it still full of business hotels? If not Dubai what about other places around that general vicinity?
Anyone with any experience of the region ?

can't help with Dubai only used as stop over on route - you could always go the other way around and meet up in US/Canada alternately if your are feeling brave aeroflot to Moscow
We will consume 85 million barrels of oil today, what's going to be left for tomorrow?

have you ever been to israel? it's a lot safer than people think and well it is like visiting a history book. stay on the beach in tel aviv and enjoy the very european beaches. i think israel is the only place in the world that does not need breast implants and bra sizes start at C so it's great to check out the beach action. this is what i was told anyways. apart from 90% of israeli's thinking the world owes them something, the rest are very nice and friendly.

Mango, you can be from Isreal and not be JEWISH! You can be Catholic! You can even be ARABIC!

I went backpacking across Israel when i was 16 to spend time on a Kibbutz - included a visit to Sharm el-Sheikh just before the handover. Paradise on Earth - country & people - which makes the recent events all the more distressing.
In the end looks like we can squeeze in (fingers crossed) a few days away in Asia before the start of term - but thanks for all the replies anyway.

hkbloke, all up i have spent 6 months in dubai and i can recommend it thoroughly. a lot of the major hotels are along the beach and they have all the beach activities. also there is 'wild wadi' which is a water-theme park. the hard rock cafe is also another good family night out.
2 good shopping centres are the 'bur juman centre' and 'dubai city centre' also the 'karama markets' is also good to snoop around for fake clothes etc....but this time of year it is a little hot.
also the 'gold souk' is interesting to go to.

I hate to sound stupid with this question but, is this a safe place for westerners? I've wanted to go after seeing this place on the travel show but was unsure of security.

i know how you feel....i was there last year for 4 months and i have a couple of theories. dubai really would be a soft target for terrorists but nothing has happened there 1) maybe a lot of these groups have business dealings in dubai that fund their operations?
2) there are a lot of powerful arabs making a **** load of cash in dubai......and they will make even more, way into the future. i think for health reasons that it would not be wise for any terrorist activities to take place in dubai. i think revenge would be swift. also i think that the leaders of the uae are very well respected amongst the arab community and as well as westerners, the uae is also a play ground for everyone in the gulf.
either way....it's all to do with money and the protection of it.

We only were there for 2 nights. It's nice. Forget the malls. Forget the deals: they tried to sell me copy stuff, made in HK/China. Just told then to look at my T-shirt: HK. "We sell that stuff to you".
But as far as I see, way much/more boring than S'pore, and believe me, that is NOT easy!

all up, i think 5 days is about the limit in dubai.
also the desert sufari's, i'm told, are good.
if you are young and single, it can be a great place to party.
