Can someone please explain to me, why companies/employers require a photo of the applicant for a position when advertising?
That is so wrong, on so many levels, that it is not even funny. Are people looking for the most qualified who might have an outstanding personality. Or the prettiest face?
Even DH's need to provide a photo?
I'm bored, I'm pi*sy, and, I have no shame.

It think it's an Asian market thing. I never ever came across it during years of hiring in the UK. Personally I think it takes the focus away from the candidates skills and exprience.

Bloke, have you seen some of the pictures that get sent in with CV's, especially from the mainland? I've even had women send holiday pics of themselves in bikini tops! Shuffling through CV's is not such a bad job after all!

Because some employers won't put it in writing or admit to it, but they don't want to employ someone who is not aesthetically pleasing to them. For instance, if they want a front office receptionist, they might not want to employ a person who looks like Joseph Merrick, to sit on their front offcie deek.
What's wrong with asking for a photograph anyway?

common fact that beautiful people get the nod before average/ugly people in job interviews.

Ha ha ha Bloke! I must see if one of my guys is subscribed! Anyway am deadly serious about that, it shocked me when I first saw photos like that. Mind you if the pics aren't professional they aren't getting an interview!

What? So posing-pouches are not considered application-friendly, then?
Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.

Well normally the CV's we get here from HK locals are without photo. The one's we receive from mainland, taiwan, malaysia, etc seem to all come with pics. I think this started as an American thing and has been taken up in various Asian coutries.

HKB: German’s do it too.
HKE: what’s wrong with it? It is the first step to discriminating a person based on looks. I see advertisements that require photos, height, weight, and age. One should hire a person based on what a person can bring to the table, and not looks. Besides, imagine if you have a butt ugly kid. Send the kid to school, they graduate and they start looking for a job. They are academically brilliant but butt ugly. Don’t you think they deserve at least an interview? A chance to sell themselves?
Speaking of photos, several months ago, I saw a couple of photos of women applying for DH jobs with their leg spread wide-open. Un-be-freaking-lievable!
Jaykay: it is definitely not an American thing. You can’t even be asked your marital status or any questions that can indicate your age.

Oh right Life, didn't realise. Was just the first time I saw this was when we were receiving CV's in New York. Mind you most of the applicants were Eastern European. Assumed it was just the in-thing there.

why a company should employe an ugly canditate when they can get a person with plesant outlook with the same qualification. Usual good looking poeple have a much better selfconfidence.

Because ugly people (like some over weight people) tend to work harder because they feel the need to prove themselves. Pretty people tend to try and float on their sex appeal, and believe they should be able to get away with everything. By not seeing what a person looks like, you can make an honest, qualified judgement based on the FACTS in the resume presented before you. (case in point, Apprentice 3)
Besides Mango, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.. and not everyone is photogenic.

Perhaps they just wanted to show they were "eager beavers"! [:D]
