Nursery Rhymes might be a cultural thing. Besides helping your child to learn to read, recite and with their speech is easier with such goofy stories.
The music will help them with a greater appreciation of music at a tender age.

Why not do both?
Ohh and the little spin wheel thingy that teaches the alphabets

a is for apple
b is for boy
etc. is a good one to have also.

I'm bored, I'm pi*sy, and, I have no shame.

noooo nooo not like the sound of music stuff. But I am not sure what statement you are answering.
The nursery rhymes are like : jack and jill went up a hill etc.
The other thing is a toy that says the letters of the alphabet out loud and gives you a word to remind it with.
Toys r'us might have it. Not familiar with wise kids.

I am sure there are tons of different methods and stuff out there.. so I can only tell you what I am familiar with.
You might want to check out the Fisher-Price website. They are known for their toys for children. They might give you more ideas.

Found this on the toys r us website. I must say it is market for over 1 yr olds. It is called the "see and say" but it is what I was refering to (not the exact) with the letters of the alphabets.

In order to select music and toys for your child to aid their cognitive development, you must first have a basic understanding of the stages of their natural development and scaffold it from there. I have an interesting website you could read up on... hope it helps!

Also - you are having a boy, right??? The research shows that little boys get most literacy from their dad's reading to them, not their mum's. My hubby loved reading Dr Seuss to our son. Especially "Green Eggs and Ham". Which has become a family saying ... "Do you like it on a tram, do you like them, Sam I Am"... whenever our son, now 17 and a half, expresses dislike for something.

I love Dr Seuss as well. The flow and repitition of sounds, the rhythm you can build up and the elasticity of the use of language. It is great for guys in particular.

Hey two star Rach!!!! I heard somewhere that the two places that Dr Seuss really took off were the US and Oz for some reason. Chubby ... I will bring you back our battered copies for a loan. A chef should enjoy reading about "Green eggs and ham" he he he he.

Yeahhhh 2 stars hahahaa. By the way, Dr Suess is gaining popularity in Singapore and I am just trying to introduce it to my students here. Browsed around in the bookstores here before and I found translated versions of Dr Suess in Chinese hahaa... ah well...
