WGC Discovery tour of Chi Lok market March 7th 2011

Hi everyone,
This morning, Monday 7th March, we had our first Discovery tour around Chi Lok Fa Yuen in bright sunshine. We were very happy to be accompanied by David Coates who is the founder of the goldcoastonline.hk website and we learnt a lot from his local knowledge.
We took the K51 bus and soon found ourselves at the Yan Oi market which was again very busy with local shoppers stocking up on fruit and veg, fish and meat. It is always a great experience to wander through a wet market and we were with greeted with smiles and ' good mornings' from shoppers and stall holders alike.
Then we wandered around the shopping area discovering more little stationary shops, bakers, a Mahjong shop, tailors, and a building where the whole of the first floor is occupied by about 50 hairdressers and barbers.
David pointed out a street where we can find a wood shop for DIY families, an excellent wine shop, and other shops for motorists who need to replace headlight bulbs, tyres etc.
He also showed us a very useful dispensary/ pharmacy where medication can be bought over the counter and the people serving speak excellent English - always useful!!
We found the Tuen Mun Eye clinic and also a Well Woman Centre which comes highly recommended.
Our morning ended with delicious dim sum in a very friendly, busy restaurant at a cost of 30 dollars per person and we then caught the bus back at just about midday as we had planned.
We will try to put together a map of the area indicating the various stores we will of course share this with anyone who is interested.
The next Discovery Tour of Chi Lok will be on Monday 4th April and the time is once more at 9am at the Gold Coast Shopping Mall bus stop.
