Default Quiet bars - 25th April 2008

Am sick & tired of going to bars where the music is so freaking loud that you have to raise your voice to be heard by the person sitting right next to you (it's not a a freaking CLUB, ffs), so am looking for recommendations for a place where you can sit down for a drink in relaxing surroundings, have a real conversation instead of yelled snippets, where the music is an enhancement rather than an intrusion, where you don't have to stand on a sweaty, crowded pavement in the heat and/or be constantly jostled.

Jem used to be a nice little place but lately it's become overrun by teenagers plugging in their iPods to the inhouse system, with s**te music (played at ear-bleeding levels, of course) and staff who apparently suffer from partial deafness.

For pre-dinner there is a bar on wyndham called The Priory which is not bad. It also serves ice cold beer in tankards which i like.

It's gets noisy and busy later on but as mentioned pre-dinner it's fine.

I used to enjoy going to the Dickens Bar on Sundays , even when I was a teenager......I could sit there and do sketches of the Jazz musicians.
Don't know if it has changed much.

There's also Feather Boa of course but they seem to have problems opening on time i find which makes them tricky for pre-dinner.

The Empire Bar off the escalator? Is it still there? Or The Globe, for a more pubby environment.
