Default Sex Scene - 29th November 2005

Zhang Ziyi and Gong Li's Hollywood movie "Memoirs of a Geisha" is set to be released in the United States in December, but the screen date on the Chinese mainland remains undecided.

Information from the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television on Sunday said the release on the mainland might be postponed from January 9th to February 10th, depending on whether a sex scene can be cut in time.

The planned mainland opening in Beijing on January 9th is now moved to Hong Kong....

Terrific title for this thread. I also liked the book--very much--and followed the
controversy afterward, particularly the objections of the woman on whose
career the book was supposedly based. I know there were significant delays
is getting the movie made. And why on earth did they choose a Chinese
actress, no matter how beautiful or talented, for this?

So what's up with this movie? I read on the internet that people want some of the cast members done away with.

"She's sold her soul and betrayed her country. Hacking her to death would not be good enough," China's state media quoted one blogger as saying of Zhang.

Some in Japan are upset with the dance scenes..

"According to this film, 'geisha' dance in a bizarre fashion, as if they were in a Los Angeles strip show," one Japanese film fan complained on a Web log.

"Japanese performers relegated to secondary roles"... well .. if you make the movie, you determine the cast.
